Going to our first baby class- baby massage and music

Azaiah and I went to our first baby class recently with our friends and I am so glad I did this. I remember the health visitor encouraging me to venture out to baby groups when I felt ready to meet other new mums. This filled me with both excitement to meet other people in the same baby bubble as myself, but also dread at the thought of stepping into an environment on my own.

So, when a friend asked if I wanted to go to a baby class with them, I felt this was the perfect first step to take to build my confidence. Azaiah absolutely loves being around other children and the idea of getting out to do activities that would stimulate and benefit him was great. We attended a trial session with our local Busylizzy group.

Busylizzy provide a variety of classes for mum’s and babies, from postnatal fitness (admittedly I haven’t done much working out since giving birth!) to baby massage. They also hold classes for expectant mummy’s so there’s something for everyone plus, they have branches across the UK.

I felt far more at ease walking in with a friend and we began with a 30 minute baby massage class. This was eventful to say the least! I had been improvising with massaging Azaiah during his bath times to get him more relaxed for bed time. I was keen to learn some proper techniques to use on him and the class was really insightful.

Thinking that this would be super relaxing for Azaiah I began to follow the teachers instructions however, doing this with a five month old who had just mastered the art of rolling made this rather tricky. I ended up letting Azaiah do his own thing as he had other ideas during the class but, being in a baby environment meant that this didn’t matter. After all, babies are going to roll, crawl and cry so this took the pressure off.

If anything it was just another reminder of how much progress he was making and looking at some of the newborns in the room made me realise just how quick it goes. We stayed for the baby music class and Azaiah absolutely loved this. He loves music and lights up whenever we sing along to Cocomelon or Little Baby Bum. The class was incredibly interactive which was great for him particularly at the stage of development that he’s at. There were instruments which turned into teething toys, bubbles and glitter.

I particularly loved the fact that sign language was taught during the session as well. I would definitely go to another baby music class with Azaiah, it was an amazing atmosphere and I felt so at ease with other mummy’s.

Busylizzy classes can be quite pricey so I’ve decided to look around at other local groups however, this is something I wanted to do anyway to try and experience different places.

I would highly recommend going to classes or baby groups because it makes what can feel like a bit of an overwhelming and sometimes lonely time a bit easier when you have a place each week to see other mum’s who can totally relate to you. Plus, the classes are great to experience with little ones, I felt so grateful to be there with Azaiah.

Next, I am taking the plunge and trying a baby sensory class on my own. I will check in with how it goes!
