Breastfeeding can provide an amazing opportunity to bond and connect with your little bub. There’s so much joy to be had in comforting and nurturing them during feeds. Having some of the best breastfeeding essentials will ensure you’re prepped and ready for nursing. Now 9 months into my breastfeeding journey, I’ve made some discoveries as I’ve gone along that have made all the difference. From the perfect muslin cover to clothing that will make feeding easier, take a look at some of the best breastfeeding essentials.
Lansinoh breast pads
Finding good quality breast pads is a must, and this pick from Lansinoh provides leak-proof protection during the day and night. The contoured design makes them comfortable to wear plus, they can absorb up to 20x their weight. Mums can also rest assured that these stay in place thanks to the two non-slip adhesive tapes.
Muslin cover
A firm favourite of mine, this muslin cover is a must-have for feeding your little one when out and about. This features a round-neck design so you can see your baby as they feed without feeling restricted. The tie around the neck also provides more security when nursing, unlike normal muslins that may slip.
Breastfeeding pillow
Perfect for snuggling with your little bub at home, this breastfeeding pillow provides comfort during feeds by supporting baby. Made from breathable cotton, this can also be used during pregnancy.
Medela breastmilk storage bags
If you plan on pumping and bottle feeding, breastmilk storage bags are great for stocking up on supplies. These leak-proof bags from Medela come in a pack of 100 and feature a double-layer as well as a double-zip design to ensure milk is secure. The double layering also protects the nutrients in the milk. The bags can be used for both storing milk in the fridge and freezing.
Pippeta LED wearable breast pump
It’s no secret that breast pumps can be quite pricey, so when I found this pick from Pippeta, I knew I wanted to give it a go. Firstly, I loved the compact, sleek design and found it easy to get to grips with all the components. This includes the LED breast pump, shield, collection cup, charger and bra strap adjusters, among other essentials.
This holds its charge for a long period and is incredibly easy to use. It starts to extract the milk quickly and is comfortable to wear. Having the option of tucking it in my bra and going hands-free made pumping even easier. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a good-quality pump that won’t break the bank.
I’ve since stopped pumping and have been nursing Azaiah because it worked better for us, but I was so pleased with this when I was using it.
Weleda nipple balm
Ideal for soothing sore and cracked nipples, Weleda’s nipple balm has been developed by midwives and pharmacists. The natural formula contains Organic Calendula Extract and Lanolin to provide much-needed relief plus, it’s safe for baby.
Meleda nipple shields
Nipple shields are a great option if you’re suffering from sore or cracked nipples but want to continue breastfeeding your little one. These are also a great pick if there’s been a difficulty around latching on. The shields have been designed for close contact with your bub.
M&S nursing bra
Available in cups B-G, this nursing bra from M&S contains a smooth padded layer that adds support and structure. The bras have been designed with extra stretch for more comfort and a stylish lace finish. The clips make nursing easy and they remain secure.
H&M ribbed modal-blend top
Tops that make nursing easier, particularly in public, are essential and this option from H&M is stylish and comfortable thanks to the modal blend which allows for a bit of stretch. I swear by these when I am out and about with Azaiah and they come in plenty of colourways.
H&M MAMA cotton nursing top
If you’d prefer a top specifically designed for nursing, this option from H&M is a great basic with a double layer making feeds easier. Available in black and white, this is perfect for everyday wear.
